In his solo debut for Putty’s Coronation, Eamon DeFabbia-Kane presents; ABERRATION. A series of sculptures and drawings, including site-specific works.
Eamon DeFabbia-Kane is constantly salvaging for the broken and discarded. A busted car door patched together with Bondo®, an assemblage of discarded plywood, hidden compositions of laid brickwork. Moments that make up the fabric of daily life and serve both as a reminder of our own mortality and the impermanence of the physical attributes of our world, an existence forever changing.
It’s in this space that DeFabbia-Kane’s sculptures originate. Small architectural details that surround us but often go unnoticed, such as baseboards, rosettes, and side casings gain prominence. Using different materials such as Bondo® and latex paint, the rigidity of these forms soften and take on new life. Baseboards become twisted and turned, folding over each other. These seemingly minimal interventions result from a sustained consideration and deliberation, yielding an effect that is elevated, poetic, and critical. Through the materiality of objects, DeFabbia-Kane examines the mystery and malleability of domesticity. What emerges is the fundamental power of the bare essentials and the effortless magic of the mundane.
In the center of the gallery, Chandelier, a large chandelier made of Bondo® hangs from the ceiling. Traditionally presented as an ostentatious decorative element, Chandelier is re-imagined with the use of common materials. DeFabbia-Kane’s choice of materials and construction are modest, carefully balancing domestic disappearance with reassurance. Through the act of assemblage and repair the possibilities of the everyday broaden while also highlighting the wasteful nature of so many human endeavors.
During the entirety of the show DeFabbia-Kane will be adding new objects to the gallery. Much like the architecture and spaces where the artist derives inspiration, the gallery will constantly evolve.
